THE NEED TO GO BACK TO THE FARM

The 1914 amalgamation of the Northern and the Southern Protectorate resulted into the formation of the entity called the Nigeria nation by the British Colonial Masters. As at the this time, Sir Frederick Luggard was the Governor-General.
Before and during this period, Nigeria was well known for her Agricultural potentials, particularly in the area of farming.
By simple definition, Agriculture is defined as the cultivation of land for the planting of crops and the rearing of animals.
By geographical location,Nigeria is in the Tropical region. The country is blessed with fertile lands all over.
Mainly, Nigeria is divided into two parts- the Northern parts and the Southern parts. The Northern parts i
are known for those Crops like Melons, Millet, Guinea corn, Grandnut,Tomatoes, Peppers, Beans, etc. On the other hands, the Southern parts are known for those crops like Cocoa, Colanut, Palmoil, Coffee, and so on.
If Nigeria had taken Agriculture as serious as she ought to have done, the country would,by now, have being a great nation.
When there's life,so the saying, there's hope. Even though as the situation  is now for the country, particularly that she's facing the challenge of the Economy recession, if she takes up the bold step of reviving the sector, the better it would be for her.
Therefore, the whole essence of this write up is to suggest to the government on how the sector could be made to function once again.
       * Firstly, agriculture should be made a compulsory subject at all levels of our educational system. Doing this would have inculcate the spirit of farming into the minds and the mentality of our youths.
*    Secondly, each student at all levels of our educational system should be made to have their garden where they would be made to plant crops and be monitoring them on daily basis. As this would go a long way in making agriculture to be more attractive to them even later in life.
   *     Thirdly, for a student in our higher institutions of learning to be qualified to be a graduate, he or she must do at least an agricultural course, and pass it at distinction level.
* Fourthly, government should give  each graduate a minimum of a hundred thousand naira to cultivate a land for planting crops. This should be strictly monitored and supervised by the state's Ministry of Agriculture where any of the graduates so desired.
     *   Fifthly, government at all levels should be ready to give soft loans to the farmers to farm. This equally must be strictly monitored and supervised. Those to be given this loans must be the genuine farmers, and not those that would divert the fund to something else.
 *   Sixthly, government should ensure that farm inputs like the fertilizer, seeds, improved yield, etc, are given to the farmers at a very subsidized rate.
*   Lastly, government should ensure that there are ready made markets for all the farm products. Not a situation they the farmers would be looking for the buyers of their farm products by themselves.
Once these advice are followed, the country would be great again in no distant time.
