This write up was about a boy called Olaniyan, who came from a well to do family but decided to join a bad group after gaining an admission into an higher institution of learning.
'Laniyan, as he was fondly called by his parents, was a sixteen years old boy when he secured an admission into a University to study Medicine and Surgery.
Throughout his Primary and Secondary schools education, he always came first in his set. He used to represent his school in many occasions for academic competitions. Apart from that, he was known for humility and respect for the schoy authority. He was never found fomenting trouble or leading any rebellious group against the school authority. He's always in the Library each time there's a free period, or anytime that their subjects teacher was not around. He was a "triangular" student. That is, from the classroom to the Library, and from the Library back home. He was Nicknamed an "Efico" by his classmates. Because of his academic performance and moral behaviour, he was loved by the majority of his teachers.
Having gained admission into the University, and was no longer staying with the parents,everything about him suddenly changed. As a year one student, one day as he was heading towards his hostel from the lecture room, met three boys who asked him of the way to Boniface Hall.
Not known to the boys, Boniface Hall was 'Laniyan's Hall of residence.
He agreed to take them to the hall. As they were approaching the Hall,one of the boys sighted a room number B15, where they were going to. "See, that's the room we're going,"the boy said. At this point, one of the remaining two boys urged 'Laniyan to give exchange their phone numbers if he would not mind. Having done this, the third boy asked for his name so that the name could be stored alongside the phone numbers. Not known to 'Laniyan', after departing the boys and was heading towards his room, one of the boys followed him from the back. 'Laniyan entered into a room number C20,which was his own room. Having done this,the boy went back to meet the other two boys.
At exactly 9pm the same day, two of the boys went to 'Laniyan's room. As one of them knocked the door, a response came from the room urging the person outside to come in. To the surprise of ' Laniyan, the person was one of the three boys he met on his way back from the Library. He offered him a seat. Few minutes later, another knock was heard from the door. 'Laniyan' quickly rushed towards the door so as to open the door for the visitor. Alas ! it was the boy who requested for his phone number out of the three boys. Since he had allowed the first boy into his room, he had no option than to allow him too in. Unfortunately for 'Laniyan',non of his room mates was around.
One of the boys told 'Laniyan' that they'd be glad if 'Laniyan' could be one of their friends on Campus. After much persuasion,'Laniyan obliged to their request.
After the lectures the following day,the boys requested 'Laniyan' to follow them out. Getting to a fast food joint, the boys requested for what they would like to eat from one of the servers who came to request for the type of food they would like to take and the drinks. When requested for what 'Laniyan would like to take,he replied the server not to bother himself, that he was okay. One of the boys then told the server to bring four raps of pounded yam and two bottles of chilled Trophy beer for 'Laniyan'. 'Laniyan refused the beer, since he has never,in his life taken a beer. After much persuasion from the boys,he agreed to take a bottle of the beer.
On getting to his room,'Laniyan' began to vomit. His room mates, who never knew the reason why 'Laniyan was vomiting, decided to take him to the University's Clinic. He was later confirmed to have taken an alcoholic drink.On an on like that, 'Laniyan' eventually became a 'professional' drinker.
One day, the boys came to pick 'Laniyan' from his room as usual. Not known to 'Laniyan that the boys were armed robbers (though still students of the University). As soon as they entered 'Laniyan's' room, one of the boys locked the doors from the inside the room,when one of them opened a bag that was with him. 'Laniyan couldn't believe what he saw. There were two pistols, three handy axe, three bayoneted daggers and a sledgehammer in the bags with a small purse containing some wraps of marijuana. The remaining boy later brought out an antelope horn wrapped with threads of different colours with a lump of local soap on it.
The trio ordered 'Laniyan to swear by the horn that he wouldn't tell anybody that the boys were armed robbers and that he must equally joined the gang.
Having realized that the boys meant business, he got no option than to comply to their order. They all left the room with all the weapons carried by one of the boys.
They went through the main gate to board a commercial vehicle. They all knew where they were going except 'Laniyan, who was following them for the first time. After twenty minutes, they stopped the vehicle and they all alighted from the vehicle. They left the major road into a foot path. After walking for five minutes, they came into an uncompleted building, there they distributed the weapons. 'Laniyan was given one of the sledgehammers.
They got to a house and one of them knocked the gate. Few seconds later, a man, the gate man in his late fifties appeared under a mango three and was heading towards the gate. As he was requesting for their mission, one of the boys aimed the gun he was holding at him. They ordered him to lie facedown. As soon as they gained entrance into the house, one of them fired a gun shot into the air to scare the occupants of the house. 'Laniyan was ordered to stay with the gateman when the three boys entered the main building. Not known to the boys inside,'Laniyan has been overpowered by the gate man. He was tied with ropes hands and legs. As the man shouted, 'thief','thief', those neighbours that were bold enough came out. Eventually, all the boys were arrested.
They were all taken into the Police station. From there they were charged into the Law Court. From the
Court, they were all condemned to death by firing squad.
On the day of the execution, all of them were given opportunity to say one thing or the other. Non of them refused to utter a word,except 'Laniyan, who said, 'IF I HAD KNOWN, I WOULDN'T HAVE JOINED THE BAD BOYS.
